The spring equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. Earth’s hemispheres receive nearly equal illumination, but local day and night are not exactly twelve hours because sunrise definitions, atmospheric refraction, and latitude affect measured daylight.

What happens at the spring equinox?
Earth’s axis remains tilted, but at the equinox it is oriented so neither hemisphere leans predominantly toward the Sun. The solar cycle then continues: daylight increases in one hemisphere and decreases in the other.
Why “equal day and night” is approximate
The Sun appears as a disc rather than a point, and the atmosphere bends light near the horizon. Sunrise is counted when the Sun’s upper edge appears and sunset when it disappears, adding minutes to the measured day.
